Nikon Rangefinder Lenses

Nikon rangefinder lenses were always marked in cm, rather than the mm that are standard today. For example a 135mm lens is marked as 13.5cm. Most lenses were available in Leica screwmount as well, and they are made in the same serial number ranges as the Nikon mount lenses, and are counted in production quantities. The same is true for telephotos in Contax mount. Although they share the same lens mount, the pitch of the rangefinder cam is slightly different. This is only a problem on telephoto lenses when used wide open. The difference is so slight that it is covered by depth of field in all other situations. These lenses can be identified by an engraved "c" on the side of the barrel. This should not be confused with the "c" often found on the lens identification ring, which means coated. Also, don't be fooled by this. All Nikkor lenses, whether marked with a "C" or not are coated.
