Nikon F Index

In 1959 Nippon Kogaku introduced their most revolutionary camera ever, the Nikon F. This camera was in production until 1974, most of that time it was the top-of-the-line camera in Nikons line-up. That is a testament to the versatility, and flexibility of the original design, as well as Nippon Kogaku's continuos improvement to the Nikon F system. Well over 700,000 of these cameras were sold.

A camera in production for this long has too much information to be limited to a single page. I have broken this up into several pages.

The Nikon F Story details the birth and reasons for success of the Nikon F system, and places it in historical context. I also ramble a bit, so it's kind of long.

Nikon F Variations covers the variations in the Nikon F bodies, not including meter finders.

As Nippon Kogaku built the meters into the finder, a Nikon F can become another model by changing finders. For example, a Nikon F body + a Nikon FTN finder becomes a Nikon FTN. Below is a list of the meter finders, and the cameras they become when mounted. The word 'Photomic" referred to the fact that they were metered. Also, FTN and FTn are the same thing.

In addition, there are these unusual variations of the Nikon F:
