Leica SLR Camera Identification

All Leica SLR cameras are model identified on the front. The first model was the Leicaflex, which is identified on the front of the camera on the wind side. The second model was the Leicaflex SL, which is marked "Leicaflex" as the first model, but also is marked "SL" above the lens. The third version is the Leicaflex SL2, marked "Leicaflex" over the lens, and "SL2" on the front of the camera on the rewind side.

After the Leicaflexes came the R series. These cameras were marked "Leica" on the front of the prism, and the model designation on one side of the front. Models range include R3, R4, R4s, R4sp, R5, R6, R7 and R8. The model R4sp is marked as an R4s, but the accessory shoe is engraved "Model 2".

Some example will be marked "MOT", indicating that the camera is motor drive capable. cameras issued in green are referred to as Safari models.

There are many models commemorating different events, including the 1972 Munich Olympics, the 50th anniversary of the Leica, the 100th birthday of Oscar Barnack (the inventor of the Leica) and climbing of Mount Everest, to name a few.
