Nikon Rangefinder

Nikon I

Serial numbers start at 6091, through approx. 609759. No "M" in front of the serial number. Film size is 24 x 32. Just over 750 produced, possibly most were recycled into Nikon M cameras, with only 200(?!) sold. Very valuable $$$$$

Nikon M

The Nikon I was not allowed to be exported because the film size was not compatable with Kodachrome slide mounts. The camera was reworked for 24 x 34 image size. Serial number has an "M" in front of it. Early models without flash synch, later models are synched. Either model $$$$$

Nikon S

The same camera as a synched M, but without the M in front of the serial number. Serial numbers from about 6094000 to 6129999 $$$
A few cameras were made with red flash holes, and are marked MIOJ on back $$$$$
1250 cameras have eight digit serial numbers, from 60910000 to 60911250. $$$$

Nikon S2

Redesigned camera with lever wind, larger viewfinder with 1:1 viewing. Could be motorized. Serial numbers from 6135000 to 6199999. Two major variations.
With chrome shutter speed dial $$$
With black shutter speed dial $$$
Either version in black $$$$$

Nikon SP

Recieves my vote as best rangefinder camera of all time.Distinctive long viewfinder window contains the viewfinder, the illuminating area for the brightlines, and a separate 28/35 finder. The word Nikon is moved to the plate covering the focus wheel. Serial numbers are 62xxxxx. Black cameras are much more valuable than chrome ones, but both are $$$$$

Nikon S3

A scaled down SP. Does not have the distinctive finder. Nikon back in the center. Serial numbers are 63xxxxx. Black cameras are much more valuable than chrome ones, but both are $$$$$

Nikon S4

Like the S3, but without self timer. Not imported into the US, but many were brought back by servicemen.. Serial numbers are 65xxxxx (please note, this prefix was reused on the Nikon F, an SLR). Chrome only. $$$$$

Nikon S3M

Half frame Nikon rangefinder. Counter numbered to 72.. Serial numbers are 66xxxxx (please note, this prefix was reused on the Nikon F, an SLR). The rarest of Nikon Rangefinder, only 195 were produced. Available in black or chrome, but either is extremely valuable, $$$$$
